Halal Stock Verification: Build an Evidence File

Edited by Amr Atef · Founder and editorial coordinatorPublished: Updated:

Decision in brief

The most useful response to “is this stock halal?” is a documented conclusion under a named methodology on a stated date. A ticker alone does not tell a reviewer which share class, financial period, data source or standard was used.

Start by identifying the method

Use the current S&P or MSCI methodology only when that is the standard being applied. Do not combine one provider’s denominator with another provider’s threshold and call the result AAOIFI.

The earlier version of this article described a universal AAOIFI formula without an adequate source. Those ratios have been removed. A qualified Shariah professional should confirm the applicable standard and interpretation; this site does not issue a religious verdict.

Build a repeatable evidence file

Evidence to request from the screener
RecordWhat the reviewer should be able to trace
SecurityIssuer, ticker, share class and exchange
BusinessActivities and revenue sources examined
Financial periodAnnual and interim filings, with dates
MethodologyNamed standard, version, thresholds and definitions
CalculationEach numerator, denominator and source line
ConclusionResult, qualifications and follow-up date

An arithmetic example, not a ruling

If a selected methodology requires debt divided by its specified value measure, and the verified inputs are 20 and 100 in the same units, the arithmetic is 20%. That does not determine compliance until a specialist confirms the definitions, permitted threshold, business screen and any other required tests.

Ask about ongoing responsibility

  • What triggers a new review after a filing or corporate event?
  • How are missing data, ambiguous business activities and conflicting results handled?
  • Who determines purification, if applicable, and how is the calculation documented?
  • Does the service review only screening, or also investment suitability and tax?

When to request specialist help

A disputed result, a material holding or incomplete issuer information is a reason to ask for a defined professional review. We can discuss an introduction and the brief to send. Agree the scope, fees and responsibility for any written opinion directly with the appointed specialist.

Sources and scope

Editorial briefing checked against the linked sources. No independent professional review is claimed. Application to your circumstances requires a qualified specialist.
