Halal Investing for HNW Families: Compare the Mandate
Decision in brief
A useful halal investment brief separates religious requirements from financial suitability. The family should state its accepted scholarly approach and the role of its existing adviser before a provider proposes products. A compliant label does not answer liquidity, concentration, price or custody questions.
Name the actual methodology
S&P and MSCI publish their own Islamic index methodologies. Use the methodology named by the product, not an interchangeable set of ratios labelled AAOIFI. The earlier article mixed standards and should not be used as a screening rule.
Compare responsibilities across the mandate
| Area | Evidence to request |
|---|---|
| Religious oversight | Named board or scholar, remit and current methodology |
| Investment | Eligible assets, risk limits and liquidity constraints |
| Cash | How uninvested cash and financing are handled |
| Ongoing checks | Review frequency and treatment of a failed screen |
| Purification | Who calculates, communicates and carries out any required action |
| Costs | All product, advisory, custody and administration charges |
Prepare a portfolio brief
- List current holdings, accounts and financing arrangements.
- State spending currency, liquidity needs and any concentrated positions.
- Record the family’s accepted standard and questions for its Shariah adviser.
- Ask for the provider’s written scope and exclusions before sharing detailed statements.
Do not confuse product access with suitability
A pooled fund, a separately managed account and a direct holding have different terms to investigate. Ask the investment adviser to explain the proposed choice and its total cost. No product list here is a recommendation, and no return advantage or universal allocation is promised.
When to resolve the brief first
If family members disagree on the accepted approach, clarify that before selecting a manager. If the main question concerns one holding, request a bounded specialist opinion rather than committing to an entire new portfolio. We coordinate requests and possible introductions; we do not issue Shariah certifications.
