Moving from the US to Monaco
A US citizen moving to Monaco generally remains within US worldwide-income taxation. Local treatment, any French nationality and the person’s US state connections need individual review; nationality and residence should not be inferred from one passport.
Model local tax and US relief separately
A foreign tax credit generally requires qualifying foreign tax, but it is not the only potential relief for an American abroad. Consider income sources, any eligible foreign earned income exclusion and the separate requirements for ending state residence.
Coordinate Monaco-situated property and any local succession requirements with US estate and gift rules. Do not treat one country’s exemption as a complete cross-border succession plan.
Access is property, not investment
No investment-residency route exists. Residency runs on accommodation — owned property or a one-year lease — plus a clean criminal record. Monaco has no codified day-count residency rule, so any specific threshold you see quoted is not verified.
Before you move
- Where no qualifying foreign tax is paid, do not assume a foreign tax credit. Test other relief separately.
- Monaco social security treatment was not verified in our research pass.
- Disclose all nationalities, including French nationality held alongside US citizenship, when the professional assesses local treatment.
