Country corridor briefUnited Kingdom → Monaco

Moving from the UK to Monaco

Monaco's 0% personal income tax applies to non-French nationals, which a UK national is. That makes this corridor cleaner than France to Monaco — but the UK's new residence-based inheritance tax test still travels with you.

Monaco's exception does not apply to you

Under the 1963 Franco-Monégasque Convention, French nationals stay in the French tax net regardless of where they live. That exception is nationality-based. A UK national moving to Monaco is outside it and receives the full 0% treatment across all income types.

Getting in is about accommodation, not investment

There is no investment-residency route into Monaco. Residency runs on accommodation — owned property or a one-year lease — plus a clean criminal record. Budget for the property market, not for a programme fee.

Monaco has no codified day-count residency rule. Any specific day threshold quoted elsewhere is not something we can verify, so plan the UK side on UK rules and treat Monaco presence as evidence rather than a formula.

The UK tail is the whole exercise

IHT is now residence-based on a 10-of-20-years test at 40% above GBP 325,000. Monaco's own inheritance tax reaches Monaco-situated assets only, and is 0% for spouse, children and parents — 8% siblings, 13% aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, 16% others.

So the estate question is almost entirely a UK question. Monaco contributes very little exposure of its own.

Before you move

  • Four or more UK ties can make you UK resident on 16 days. Monaco's proximity to London makes this a live risk, not a theoretical one.
  • Monaco social security treatment was not verified in our research pass — confirm it locally before modelling employment structures.
