Moving from the UK to the UAE: what actually changes in 2026
This corridor is not really about rates. The UAE charges no personal income tax at all, so the arithmetic is trivial. What decides the outcome is the UK side: whether you were using the four-year FIG window, and how the new residence-based inheritance tax test treats you after you go.
The FIG window is a four-year clock, not a status
The remittance basis and non-domiciled status ended on 6 April 2025. The replacement, the Foreign Income and Gains regime, gives a 100% exemption on foreign income and gains for four tax years to anyone who was non-resident for the ten prior years, claimed annually.
For an inbound person that is generous. For someone already four years in, it is a cliff edge: year five is full worldwide taxation at up to 45%, with the personal allowance already tapered away above GBP 125,140. The end of an eligible FIG period is therefore a date to review when preparing a relocation brief.
Inheritance tax now follows residence, not domicile
IHT moved to a residence-based test measured over 10 of the last 20 years. Leaving the UK no longer severs exposure on the day you land in Dubai; the tail runs on. At 40% above GBP 325,000, plus the GBP 175,000 residence band tapered away above GBP 2M estates, the tail is the largest single number in most of these plans.
The UAE side offers no offset here: there is no UAE inheritance tax, so the entire question is how long the UK tail runs and what sits inside it.
What the UAE side actually gives you
No personal income tax on wages, investment income or real estate income. No capital gains tax, no dividend tax, no wealth tax, no inheritance tax. Non-GCC nationals make no social security contribution. VAT is 5%.
UAE business turnover exceeding AED 1,000,000 in a calendar year can bring a natural person into corporate tax; the standard 9% rate applies to taxable income above AED 375,000 — wages and personal investment income are outside it. If you are moving an operating business rather than a portfolio, that threshold is the number to model.
Domestic tax residence has alternative tests, including 183+ days, a conditional 90+ day route, and usual residence with the centre of interests. Check the FTA guide and any treaty separately. ICP lists qualifying property investment of at least AED 2,000,000; approved local-bank financing is permitted subject to conditions. Confirm residence duration and documentation before purchasing.
Before you move
- The UK Statutory Residence Test can make you resident on as few as 16 days if you keep four or more ties — a Dubai address does not, by itself, break UK residence.
- Pre-April-2025 foreign gains can be brought onshore under the Temporary Repatriation Facility at 12% for 2025/26 and 2026/27, rising to 15% in 2027/28. That window closes.
- UK dividend rates rose to 10.75% and 35.75% from 2026/27, so the cost of a partial year of UK residence went up.
