UAE vs UK Residency: A Family Decision Brief for 2026

Edited by Amr Atef · Founder and editorial coordinatorPublished: Updated:

Decision in brief

A useful UK–UAE comparison starts with the family’s actual decision: moving an operating business, changing where the principal lives, or obtaining a second residence. These are different projects. A visa, a home and a tax position should be reviewed separately.

The UK rule that changes the comparison

The UK FIG regime began on 6 April 2025. Eligibility depends on the first four UK tax-resident years following at least ten non-resident years; it is not available to every new arrival.

Ask your UK adviser to establish the available years, any departure-year treatment and the consequences for existing holdings. Keep inheritance exposure, trusts and a planned business sale in the same briefing rather than assuming an income-tax comparison answers them.

The UAE FTA distinguishes wages and personal investment income from business activity for natural-person corporate tax. That distinction is not an exemption for every company or holding structure.

What to prepare

  • A residence and travel history, including available homes and family ties.
  • An asset and income map with ownership, country and currency.
  • The timing of any disposal, dividend, school move or management change.
  • A list of existing advisers so the receiving specialist can coordinate the missing work.

When this route may not fit

Pause if the plan relies on a nominal address while the principal’s life remains elsewhere, if tax is the only comparison but education is the deciding constraint, or if a transaction deadline leaves no time for advice. Ask for a written cross-border scope before changing ownership or residence.
